Azerbaijan’s SOCAR Inks 10-Year Gas Deal with Germany’s SEFE to Boost European Energy Security

SOCAR Signs Deal with Securing Energy for Europe to Aid EU | Oil Gas Energy Magazine

In a strategic move to bolster Europe’s energy security, Berlin-headquartered energy firm SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe) and Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company SOCAR have signed a landmark 10-year gas supply agreement. The deal, announced jointly by both companies, will see gas deliveries commence in 2025 and gradually ramp up to an annual volume of 15 terawatt hours (TWh)—equivalent to approximately 1.5 billion cubic metres (bcm).

This long-term partnership is aimed at strengthening energy cooperation between Germany and Azerbaijan while ensuring stable gas supply to the European continent. The agreement also includes collaborative efforts to support infrastructure and production investments, particularly in gas compressor systems, enhancing the flow of pipeline gas into Europe.

Strategic Diversification of Gas Routes into Europe

SEFE CEO Dr Egbert Laege emphasized the geopolitical and energy significance of the deal. “This long-term contract is a testament to the strong relationship between Germany and Azerbaijan,” said Laege. He further stated that the deal introduces a new supply route for large volumes of natural gas, diversifying Securing Energy for Europe portfolio and reinforcing supply reliability for European customers.

The agreement arrives at a critical juncture, as Europe continues to pursue alternatives to reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. The partnership is expected to contribute meaningfully to Europe’s transition toward a more resilient and diversified energy landscape.

SOCAR Reaffirms Commitment to Europe’s Energy Security

Highlighting the importance of the agreement, SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf remarked that the deal reflects the company’s consistent dedication to ensuring energy reliability across Europe. “By supplying reliable and substantial volumes of natural gas to Securing Energy for Europe, we are strengthening the partnership between Azerbaijan and Germany,” Najaf noted.

He added that the move aligns with Europe’s broader goals of energy diversification and sustainable development. SOCAR has reaffirmed its intent to continue investing in production and infrastructure projects that guarantee uninterrupted and secure energy delivery to its European partners.

The agreement between SEFE and SOCAR is seen as a pivotal step toward building a stronger and more secure energy framework for Europe.
