Rice Creek Solar Energy Center Goes Live
The Rice Creek Solar Energy Center in Putnam County, Florida, has officially begun operations, delivering approximately 75 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to 12 cities throughout the state. This facility is part of the florida solar project, one of the nation’s largest municipal solar initiatives. The solar farm, located near Palatka, features 213,000 solar panels capable of powering around 14,000 homes. It represents the third operational solar site in the Florida Municipal Solar Project, with additional projects already in the pipeline.
This groundbreaking initiative emphasizes the state’s commitment to renewable energy. The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA), headquartered in Orlando, oversees the project. FMPA’s general manager, Jacob Williams, highlighted the collaborative approach, stating that it allows participating communities to access cost-effective and carbon-free energy.
Widespread Impact on Florida Cities
Twelve municipal utilities are reaping the benefits of Rice Creek’s clean energy, including providers such as Beaches Energy Services in Jacksonville Beach, Keys Energy Services in Key West, and Kissimmee Utility Authority. Smaller communities like Havana, New Smyrna Beach, and Newberry are also joining the solar revolution, with Rice Creek marking their first venture into solar power.
Miami-based Origis Energy, the developer, owner, and operator of Rice Creek, plays a vital role in the project. Josh Teigiser of Origis Energy expressed pride in supporting FMPA’s initiative, noting that long-term solar energy agreements contribute to lower, more predictable utility bills for residents.
Expanding Florida’s Renewable Energy Footprint
The Florida Municipal Solar Project is already expanding, with construction underway for a fourth solar site, Whistling Duck Solar, located in Levy County. Plans for the initiative aim to establish a total of seven solar farms, which will collectively generate around 525 MW of renewable energy.
As the Florida solar project grows, it continues to position Florida as a leader in clean energy while providing cost savings and environmental benefits to communities across the state.
