A Milestone in Renewable Energy
After years of anticipation, the Sandrini Solar Park in Kern County is officially operational, marking a significant milestone for renewable energy in California. The solar facility, developed by EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA), commenced operations in late 2024. Located near Bakersfield, it comprises two phases: the 200 MW Sandrini I and the 100 MW Sandrini II. Together, these installations can power more than 76,000 homes annually. The Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA), a key partner, now sources over a third of its electricity needs from Sandrini II.
“This project aligns with our mission to deliver 100% renewable energy to Humboldt County by 2030,” noted Sarah Schaefer, Chair of RCEA’s Board. RCEA serves over 90% of Humboldt County’s electricity needs through its community choice energy program. Sandrini II’s contribution brings RCEA closer to meeting California’s ambitious renewable energy goals.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Beyond energy generation, the Sandrini Solar Park is bolstering the local economy. Since 2023, it has contributed over $510,000 in tax payments, supporting schools, infrastructure, and public services in Kern County. The park’s construction employed more than 200 workers, and its ongoing operations continue to provide job opportunities and stimulate spending at nearby businesses, including restaurants and hotels.
The project also benefits the environment, saving over 381 million gallons of water annually compared to traditional energy sources. “These water savings are crucial for Kern County’s conservation efforts,” said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDPR NA. The solar park exemplifies California’s leadership in sustainable energy, aligning with the state’s goal of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2045.
Leading the Renewable Energy Charge
EDPR NA, a top renewable energy developer, has solidified its presence in California with six renewable energy projects totaling 488 MW of capacity. In addition to Sandrini I & II, their portfolio includes the Rising Tree Wind Farm, Lone Valley Solar Park, and Scarlet Solar Energy Park, among others. The company continues to expand its investments in solar parks and energy storage systems to meet the growing demand for clean energy.
EDPR NA’s projects reflect the broader efforts of California’s community choice aggregators (CCAs), which have already brought 8,000 MW of clean energy online and have another 10,000 MW under development. These initiatives have created over 36,000 construction jobs statewide, highlighting the sector’s economic significance.
“Sandrini I & II are proof of our commitment to clean energy and California’s bold renewable energy targets,” said Ganapathy. As the state pushes toward a sustainable future, projects like Sandrini Solar Park are paving the way for cleaner energy solutions, stronger communities, and a healthier planet.
