Fire Breaks Out at Karn Generating Complex

A fire erupted at the Karn Generating Complex, a Consumers Energy plant near Bay City, causing thick smoke and a spill of mineral oil on-site. The incident occurred Monday afternoon when an electrical transformer caught fire in Bay County’s Hampton Township. The blaze quickly spread to nearby structures, prompting an immediate evacuation of all personnel. Consumers Energy spokeswoman Tracy Wimmer confirmed that everyone at the facility was safe and that the fire did not result in any injuries.

Mineral Oil Spill Reported, No Public Risk

In addition to the smoke, the fire led to a spill of mineral oil, though Consumers Energy plant assured the public that it posed no danger to nearby residents or emergency crews. Officials have not disclosed the exact volume of the spill but emphasized that containment measures were being implemented. The company is working closely with environmental and emergency response teams to manage the aftermath.

No Power Disruptions Expected

The Karn Generating Complex previously shut down its two coal-fired units, 1 and 2, in 2023, but units 3 and 4, which operate on natural gas and fuel oil, remain active for backup power during peak demand. Wimmer reassured the public that the fire would not lead to any power outages in the surrounding areas. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and authorities continue to monitor the situation for any potential risks.
