A Commitment to Sustainable Energy Transformation
The EGYPES 2025 Sustainability in Energy Conference brought together leading experts from the energy and climate sectors to discuss pragmatic strategies for advancing decarbonization. Under the theme “Driving Realistic Decarbonization Targets by 2030,” the event focused on actionable steps necessary for accelerating the transition to cleaner energy sources within the next decade.
Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, emphasized the nation’s commitment to making sustainable energy more accessible and efficient despite global challenges. She highlighted Egypt’s progress in environmental reporting, revealing that the country had submitted its first transparency report to the climate secretariat at the end of 2024. She also noted a 57% reduction in harmful emissions within the oil and gas sector, achieved through flaring reduction technology and energy reuse.
Philip Whittaker, Executive Vice President of Business Services at Harbour Energy, reaffirmed his company’s dedication to balancing energy demands with sustainability efforts. He praised Harbour Energy’s collaboration with Egypt’s EGAS, announcing that they had successfully eliminated routine flaring at the Disouq site, making them the first company in Egypt to implement a zero-flaring project.
Natural Gas and Emission Reduction Strategies
EGYPES 2025 One of the key panel discussions at the conference, “Leveraging Natural Gas as a Destination Fuel,” featured industry leaders including Siemens Energy, Al Fanar Gas Group, XRG, Teréga, and Méditerranéenne de lʼEnergie et du Climat. The session explored the role of natural gas as a bridge fuel in the transition toward a low-carbon future, positioning it as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Another critical discussion, “Eliminating Methane Emissions, Reducing Flaring, and Electrifying Operations,” focused on industry-wide efforts to curb methane emissions and integrate renewable energy sources into oil and gas production. Experts from Baker Hughes, Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, TAQA, and Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum shared insights on reducing carbon footprints through technological advancements.
Ahmed Osama, General Manager of the Energy Efficiency Department at Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, advocated for a shift in the global energy dialogue, emphasizing that the focus should be on reducing emissions rather than eliminating energy sources. He also highlighted Egypt’s use of drones to measure methane emissions at energy sites for more accurate environmental monitoring.
Innovation, Clean Technologies, and ESG Reporting
The conference also explored the role of advanced technology and clean energy solutions in reducing fossil fuel dependence. In a session titled “Diversifying into New Energies and Enabling Clean Technologies,” experts from Dragon Oil, MENA SLB New Energy, and Ras Ghareb Wind Energy discussed innovations such as artificial intelligence, smart grids, and renewable energy integration.
Additionally, a session on “Demonstrating Sustainability and Emissions Reduction through Effective ESG Reporting” examined the growing importance of transparent sustainability practices. Industry leaders from El Sewedy Electric, ENGIE, Fertiglobe, MEA Emerson, AMEA Power, and DESFA emphasized the need for robust ESG frameworks to track emissions reduction progress and strengthen corporate accountability.
The EGYPES 2025 conference reinforced the industry’s commitment to realistic, actionable steps in achieving net-zero emissions while ensuring global energy security. Through collaboration, technological innovation, and policy alignment, industry leaders aim to drive sustainable transformation without compromising energy accessibility.
