Consumers Energy Prepares for Severe Storms with Over 500 Crews on Standby

Consumers Energy Storm Prep: 500 Crews Set to Respond | Oil Gas Energy Magazine

As Michigan braces for a round of severe weather Thursday night into Friday, Consumers Energy is mobilizing more than 500 company and contractor crews in anticipation of potential storm-related power outages. Forecasters predict damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes, prompting the utility provider to ramp up preparations across the state.

The energy company announced that its crews are strategically positioned and ready to respond immediately, should the weather cause disruptions. “Michigan is known for rapidly changing weather, so our job at Consumers Energy is to be ready for all possible conditions,” said Chris Wisniewski, one of the company’s designated Officers in Charge for this event. Wisniewski added that lineworkers are prepared to work overnight if necessary to safely and quickly restore power to affected customers.

Public Urged to Prepare and Stay Safe

To help residents prepare for the incoming storm, Consumers Energy is urging the public to take proactive steps. Customers are advised to charge electronic devices in advance and have an emergency kit on hand. Kits should include flashlights with extra batteries, non-perishable food, water, blankets, medications, baby and pet supplies, and a battery-powered radio for news updates.

In the event of an outage, Consumers Energy encourages people to unplug sensitive electronics such as computers and televisions, and to turn off power strips. For those with backup generators, the company emphasizes the importance of using them safely. Generators should never be operated inside enclosed spaces like garages or near air intakes, as this can lead to deadly carbon monoxide buildup.

For real-time information, customers can visit the Consumers Energy Outage Center, which offers preparation tips, outage reporting, and restoration updates. The utility also recommends downloading the Consumers Energy mobile app for convenient access to updates and outage maps.

Safety and Cleanup Protocols Emphasized

As part of its emergency response plan, Consumers Energy also reminds the public to prioritize safety around downed power lines. Individuals should stay at least 25 feet away from any fallen wires and immediately report them by calling 911 and the company’s emergency line at 800-477-5050. The company warns against making false reports, which can hinder efforts to restore power quickly and safely.

Motorists are urged to be cautious when driving near work zones, slowing down and allowing safe passage for utility crews. Additionally, the company noted that in cases where tree trimming or removal is necessary to restore power, crews will clear only what is essential. Property owners will be responsible for any remaining cleanup once conditions are safe.

With high winds expected to intensify Friday night, Consumers Energy remains on high alert. The utility company continues to monitor weather developments closely and is committed to restoring power swiftly while ensuring the safety of both workers and customers.
